Mac mini with M5 Pro
The most compelling new Mac mini tier for local models plus always-on agent services, if the 48GB/64GB configurations fit the budget.

“Compatible” means the documented operating system/runtime path is plausible or official. It does not guarantee a particular model, speed, driver, thermals, or local inference quality. Always test the exact model and version before buying for a production workload.
What the official source says
Apple announced M5 Pro Mac mini on August 25, 2026. Apple says it scales up to an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU, supports up to 64GB unified memory with 307GB/s bandwidth, includes Neural Accelerators, Thunderbolt 5, macOS 27, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and 2.5Gb Ethernet with a 10Gb option.
Local-AI fit
Strong compact local-AI option for larger quantized models and concurrent agent/UI workloads, subject to the chosen memory configuration and runtime support. It is not equivalent to a discrete 24GB/32GB GPU for every CUDA workload.
Specifications that matter
- memory: Up to 64GB unified memory according to Apple announcement; prefer 48GB or 64GB for larger local models and multiple services.
- storage: Prefer 1TB or more if keeping several model families, containers, embeddings, and backups locally; external Thunderbolt 5 storage is a useful expansion path.
- os: macOS 27 announced with the product; check current runtime compatibility before production use.
- thermal: Apple positions it for demanding sustained workflows and always-on agentic computing; actual sustained inference behavior needs independent testing.
Service compatibility matrix
| Service | Compatibility interpretation |
|---|---|
| Hermes Agent | good host for macOS agent workflows, with local, Docker, SSH, or cloud execution boundaries |
| OpenClaw | good dedicated gateway candidate; pair with cloud models or a local backend depending on memory and runtime |
| Ollama | strong Apple Silicon candidate; confirm current MLX/GGUF support and model-specific memory fit |
| LM Studio | likely suitable once release support is confirmed; official app requirements currently cover Apple Silicon |
| Open WebUI | good UI host when paired with a separately tested local model backend |

Unresolved claims and re-checks
- Exact base memory/storage combinations and current purchase-configurator availability need confirmation from Apple's live store/specifications page.
- No independent tokens-per-second or thermals were found in the official announcement.
- Unified memory is shared by CPU/GPU/system; usable model memory is lower than installed memory after macOS and other processes.
