Straight answer

Is Speechify worth it?

Whether Speechify's text-to-speech reading assistant is worth paying for over built-in OS screen readers or free TTS tools.

Short answer: worth it if you regularly convert documents, web pages, or PDFs to audio and want natural-sounding voices with speed control. Not worth it if you only occasionally need TTS or if built-in OS features cover your needs.

What the paid plans actually buy

  • Free: up to 1.5x speed, 10 robotic-sounding voices, basic TTS
  • Premium: natural voices, higher speed limits, scanning, skipping

  • You need speed control above 2x or the ability to skip headers/footnotes

When it is not worth it

  • You only occasionally need TTS — built-in OS screen readers may suffice
  • You need audio for commercial distribution — verify the commercial license terms
  • You want multi-speaker narration — dedicated audio production tools are more appropriate
